Plain Dealer, The (Cleveland, OH) - October 25, 1994 Deceased Name: GREGORY BARNES, 24 Gregory Barnes served in the Air Force during Operation Desert Storm. For 10 months prior to his death, he had been manager of J.D.'s Post House in Parkman. Greg, 24, of Mentor, died Friday after his motorcycle struck a culvert in Concord Township. Greg was born in Painesville and graduated from Mentor High School in 1988. He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Concord Township. He is survived by his father, James of Painesville; mother, Geri of Mentor; two sisters; two brothers; and grandparents, Ruth Sumser of Hamilton, Ohio, Loretta Reuter of Painesville, and Nina Barnes of Delphos, Ohio. Services were held on October 25, 1994 at 11 a.m., St. Gabriel Church, 9935 Button Rd., Concord Township.

I found a chilling newspaper article that I had cut out, dated 10-22-1994 from the Newsherald on our late brother Greg Barnes, here is goes:

Speeding motorcyclist crashes at 80 mph, dies

A mentor Man was killed early Friday after he was thrown from his motorcycle while traveling 80 mph on Auburn Road. Gregory James Barnes, 24, of Hidden Glen Drive, was pronounced dead at LakeEast hospital in Painesville shortly after his body was recovered in a ditch off Auburn Road in Concord Township.

Lake County Coroner William Downing said Barnes died of injuries to his head and neck.

According to the Lake County Sheriff's reports, Barnes was traveling north on Auburn Road near Speer Road at about 2:40am when his 1993 Honda 600 veered off the right side of the road and struck a driveway culvert pipe.

The pipe caused Barnes to be ejected from his seat of the motorcycle. His body was tossed more than 90 feet. while his motorcycle continued rolling end-over-end until it stopped more than 160 feet from the driveway, according to reports.

Investigators at the scene estimated the motorcycle was traveling at about 80 mph, twice the legal limit for Auburn Road, reports indicate. Barnes was wearing a helmet.

It really makes me sad to read the tragic details surrounding Greg's passing. For those of you who did not know Greg, he was an outgoing, fun person to be around. Please remember him for the person he was, and not the way that he left this world.
